If you’re a new mum, chances are you’ve spent at least a little bit of time wondering:
“What do I actually need for this baby?”
Because the list of newborn essentials can get a little ridiculous, can’t it?
There are gadgets for feeding, sleeping, bathing, swaddling, white noise, cleaning, sterilising, carrying, changing and seemingly everything else your tiny human might possibly need.
And when you’re pregnant, it’s very hard to know which products are genuinely useful and which ones are going to sit untouched in the cupboard.
As a newborn photographer in Ipswich and Brisbane, I spend a lot of time with families in those first precious weeks at home with their new baby. I see what is actually being used — and I hear a LOT of conversations between mums about the things that have made those early weeks just a little bit easier.
So I thought I’d put together a list of some of the newborn products mums recommend to other mums.
These aren’t necessarily the products that appear on every newborn checklist. They’re the things that have been recommended to me by mums I’ve met through my work and the products that are worth knowing about when you’re preparing for life with a newborn.
And honestly? Some of them are absolute genius.
If you’ve ever tried to wrap a newborn in a muslin wrap, only to have their tiny arms escape approximately 14 seconds later, you’ll understand why a good swaddle can be a lifesaver.
The Miracle Blanket Swaddle is designed to keep baby’s arms snug and secure, helping prevent those newborn startle movements from disturbing them while they’re settling.
One of the things that makes it appealing to new parents is the design. You don’t need to become a professional baby-wrapper to get a nice, secure swaddle.
A newborn’s startle reflex can be surprisingly strong, and some babies seem determined to wake themselves up with their own arms.
A well-designed swaddle can help create a snug, secure feeling when settling your baby.
It’s one of those products that can be particularly handy during those first few weeks when you’re figuring out what helps your baby settle.
Newborn mum tip: Always follow safe-sleep recommendations and the manufacturer’s instructions. Stop swaddling when your baby shows signs of trying to roll.
This might be one of those products you see on a baby list and think, “Surely we won’t need that?”
Then your newborn gets their first blocked nose.
And suddenly you’re very interested.
The Snotty Boss is a motorised nasal aspirator designed to help clear mucus from your baby’s nose. It has soft silicone tips, including a newborn-sized option, and is designed to make clearing congestion easier.
Newborns can’t blow their own noses, and a blocked nose can make feeding and settling much harder.
Having a nasal aspirator at home means you don’t have to start Googling solutions at 2am when your baby is snuffly and uncomfortable.
It’s one of those products you hope you don’t need very often — but you’ll be very glad you have it when you do.
Bathing a newborn can be one of those things that looks incredibly simple until you’re actually holding a tiny, slippery baby!
The Bleue Bébé Sink Bather is designed to sit in your sink and support your baby during bath time.
And one of the things I really like about this recommendation is that it’s not just about making things easier for baby — it’s about making things easier for you.
You’re recovering from birth.
You’re tired.
You’re probably feeding around the clock.
And bending over a bath or sink while trying to safely support a newborn isn’t necessarily the most comfortable thing in the world.
A sink bather brings baby up closer to you and can make bath time feel more manageable.
For new mums, especially during those early postpartum weeks, anything that reduces unnecessary bending and awkward positions gets my vote.
Remember: Always supervise your baby closely around water and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
If you’re formula feeding or combination feeding, you’ll quickly discover just how many bottles a newborn can go through in a day.
And night.
And another night.
The Baby Brezza Formula Pro is designed to automatically dispense, mix and warm formula and water, making bottle preparation quicker and more convenient.
When you’re holding a hungry newborn at 3am, the last thing you want is a complicated bottle-preparation process.
The Formula Pro is designed to automate much of that process, which can be a huge time saver for families making multiple bottles throughout the day and night.
It’s particularly appealing if you’re looking for ways to reduce some of the repetitive jobs that come with newborn life.
Important: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the correct preparation instructions for your specific formula. Accurate formula preparation is essential.
The Stokke Tripp Trapp is one of those products that I love because it isn’t something you’ll necessarily outgrow in six months. We have used this product in our family, and to be honest, its the best thing. It has grown with the kids, and now my daughter is 11, she is just moving into an adult chair.
With the appropriate accessories, it can be used from the newborn stage and then adapted as your baby grows.
Eventually, your child can sit at the table with the rest of the family rather than being separated at a traditional high chair.
I’m always a fan of products that have longevity.
Baby stuff has a habit of taking over your house very quickly, so a product that can grow with your child is a welcome change.
The Tripp Trapp can become part of family meals for years rather than being something that gets packed away after a relatively short period.
Another recommendation that regularly comes up when mums talk about newborn essentials is the Angelcare Bath Support.
It is designed to support baby during bath time while allowing water to drain through the seat.
It’s lightweight, easy to clean and designed for babies from birth.
Having a supportive bath seat can make those early baths feel a little less daunting.
Instead of trying to support your slippery newborn entirely in your arms while also attempting to wash them, the bath support provides a place for baby to lie while you focus on bath time.
And anything that makes a new mum feel a little more confident is a good thing.

Important: A bath support does not replace adult supervision. Never leave your baby unattended around water.
Let’s talk about something that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves on those enormous newborn shopping lists:
Mum needs things too.
The Medela Organic Nipple Balm is designed to soothe and protect sore or dry nipples during breastfeeding.
It contains organic ingredients including olive oil, avocado oil and calendula and is designed to be used without needing to be washed off before breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding can take a little time for both mum and baby to learn.
Those first few weeks can be particularly tough on sensitive skin, so having a good nipple balm nearby can make feeding more comfortable.
My advice?
Don’t just keep it in the bathroom.
Put one wherever you regularly feed.
Because when you’re sitting on the couch feeding your baby at 2am, you don’t want to realise your nipple balm is on the other side of the house.

The Lullaby Lola Essential Oil Rollers are another mum-recommended product that can become part of your everyday routine.
Lullaby Lola has a range of essential oil roller blends designed around different stages and needs of babyhood.
For some mums, the appeal isn’t necessarily having another “baby product”.
It’s creating a familiar little ritual.
Newborn life can feel like one long cycle of feeding, changing, settling and sleeping.
Creating little routines can help bring some calm and predictability into your day.
A roller used according to the manufacturer’s instructions can become part of a bedtime or wind-down routine.

A note for new parents: Essential oils aren’t automatically safe simply because they’re natural. Always follow the manufacturer’s age recommendations, dilution instructions and directions for use. If you’re unsure whether they’re appropriate for your baby, speak with your healthcare professional.
The second nipple balm on my list is GAIA Nipple Balm.
It’s made with organic oils including sunflower, avocado, jojoba and calendula and is designed to moisturise, soothe and protect sore or cracked nipples.
It is also lanolin-free and doesn’t need to be washed off before feeding.
Again, this is one of those little products that can make those early breastfeeding days more comfortable.
And I love that it’s not necessarily a one-use product. GAIA also recommends it for other areas of dry skin, including lips and heels.
So once breastfeeding is well established, you can continue finding uses for it rather than putting it away in a cupboard.

Here’s my honest opinion as a mum and an in-home newborn photographer in Ipswich:
Probably not nearly as much as the baby shops would have you believe.
Your baby doesn’t need every gadget, toy and clever invention available.
But there are products that can make those first few months easier.
And that’s why I love asking other mums what they actually used.
Because there’s a big difference between:
“This product is marketed as a newborn essential.”
and
“I had a newborn and this genuinely made my life easier.”
The Miracle Blanket for those wriggly newborn arms.
The Snotty Boss for those first blocked noses.
A sink bather to make bath time easier.
A formula machine for families making bottles around the clock.
A high chair that grows with your baby.
And nipple balm for Mum because, let’s be honest, Mum deserves a little looking after too.
These are the kinds of recommendations I love passing on to other new mums.
If you’re currently in the newborn bubble, I want you to know something:
Your house does not need to be perfect for newborn photos.
Actually, it doesn’t need to be Instagram-worthy at all.
As a Brisbane and Ipswich newborn photographer, I come to you.
My in-home newborn photography sessions are designed around your baby’s rhythm, your recovery and your postpartum pace — not the other way around.
You don’t have to pack up the baby.
You don’t have to get everyone dressed and into the car.
You don’t need to clean the entire house before I arrive.
And you certainly don’t need to apologise for the breast pump, bottles on the bench, nappy bin or washing pile.
I’ve seen it all.
I bring the wraps, baby outfits and props, and we work with the light and space you already have in your home.
Most importantly, baby leads the way.
If they need feeding, we feed them.
If they need cuddles, we cuddle.
If they need a break, we take a break.
If they’re wide awake instead of sleepy, we work with that too.
Because these first few weeks are fleeting.
And one day, you’re going to look back at those photographs and wish you could step straight back into that tiny, messy, exhausting, beautiful newborn bubble.
That’s exactly why I love in-home newborn photography in Brisbane and Ipswich.
I don’t just want to photograph your baby.
I want to photograph your family as you are right now.
The tiny fingers.
The sleepy cuddles.
The feeding.
The chaos.
The way your partner looks at your baby.
The older siblings who are still figuring out this whole “big brother” or “big sister” thing.
And you — because you deserve to be in the photographs too.
I’m Ange, a Brisbane and Ipswich newborn photographer, and I specialise in relaxed, natural newborn photography in the comfort of your own home.
No studio. No rushing. No pressure for your baby to behave perfectly.
Just your family, your home and this tiny little chapter that goes far too quickly.

And if you have a newborn product you absolutely couldn’t live without, I’d love to hear about it.
After all, the best recommendations usually come from mums who have actually been there.
This list is based on products recommended to me by mums and information provided by the manufacturers. I haven’t personally tested every product listed, so consider this a collection of parent recommendations rather than personal product endorsements.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and current Australian safe-sleep, bathing and product-safety recommendations. If you’re unsure whether a product is appropriate for your baby, speak with your midwife, child health nurse, GP or other qualified health professional.
